Enemies of Egypt

In Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Egypt is the turning point. The wild animals of Peru and Greece give way to something stranger, as the game embraces the supernatural and never looks back.

Where the Game Goes Supernatural

The deadly animals of Peru and the mercenaries of Greece were only the beginning. Egypt is where everything changes. “Egypt is the turning point,” says Raul Siqueira, Game Director at Crystal Dynamics. “Egypt is when we go supernatural, and we’re here to celebrate it. We’re not here to be shy about it. We’re going to show you flying creatures. We’re going to show you cat mummies, a bunch of cool creatures that you will want to fight, but also want to look at, because the way they behave says something about the environment around them.”

That shift is designed to land like a shock. “The first introduction of the mummy, when we drop the sarcophagus and it pops out, that is meant to be a punch in the face,” Siqueira says. “It is us saying, look how cool this game is.”

The Cat Mummy

The standout new threat is the crawling cat mummy, and it arrives to raise the stakes. “In Egypt we begin to see some otherworldly enemies, and the crawling mummy cat is a great example,” says Jason Epps, Design Director at Crystal Dynamics. “It throws fireballs but also leaps to engage in melee attacks. The crawling mummy cats are indicative of the ramp up in challenge and variety of abilities in the Egyptian enemy set.”

They are also the region’s marquee encounter. “The crawling mummy cats are the standout in Egypt,” Epps says. “There are several encounters that involve multiple mummy cats that are harrowing and push players to use all of Lara’s tools: shooting, movement, focus mode, everything.”

For Siqueira, the cat mummy embodies the team’s whole philosophy of keeping players on the move. “The cat mummy is the first supernatural enemy we introduce, and it has magical abilities you will learn to love and hate depending on your play style,” he says. “They lob fire grenades at you, and if you don’t move, they will explode. They arc and move just enough to test your ability. Do you dodge it? Do you use focus? Do you sprint? It’s meant to keep players moving so the combat keeps flowing in a natural way.”

Guardians of the Tomb

The deeper Lara descends, the more the enemies change. “If you’re on the outside, in those huge caves and canyons where the city of Kamun is hidden, we put wild animals there,” says Mateusz Dzięcioł, Level Designer at Flying Wild Hog. “The closer you get to the secrets of ancient Egypt, the more you have those supernatural guardians.”

Even the familiar predators feel more dangerous here. “When you first encounter the leopard in Egypt, it’s quite tense, because it can jump on you from nowhere,” Dzięcioł says. “It can sink into any hole you see around you. It becomes really dangerous, and you really feel that this is the animal’s home. You’re not at home. This is the tomb.”

Experience Director Jeff Adams says Egypt is where the game’s mythic creatures take center stage. “At the end of Greece you get a little hint of centaur combat,” he says. “But when you get into Egypt, that’s when these hybrid creatures start to really come to the forefront in terms of your combat experience.” The team took care to make each creature feel like it belongs. “We want to make sure the enemies are regionally associated with where you’re at in the world,” Adams says. “If you’re in Egypt, you’re not fighting a snow leopard from another country.”

Egypt is where the game stops playing by the rules it taught you. The creatures here are stranger, deadlier, and more unpredictable than anything Lara has faced, and they are only a warning of what still waits deeper in the dark.
